Trauma Intensive Therapy
Trauma is the emotional response to an overwhelming or distressing experience that exceeds a person’s ability to cope. Therapy helps people process that experience, reduce ongoing symptoms, and regain a sense of stability and control.
Although weekly or biweekly therapy can be extremely effective for some, individuals experiencing significant impacts from trauma may find the pace of weekly sessions slow or at times repetitive. With nearly two decades of clinical experience, Mary Ann Green has consistently heard these clients express similar frustrations:
- “I’m tired of talking about the same thing every week.”
- “I feel like I get caught up in life and lose progress between sessions.”
- “I just want to get through this already.”
- "There isn't enough time in each session to go deep"
Unfortunately, weekly or bi-weekly sessions can get taken over by day-to-day stress instead of core trauma work. Emotional buildup without enough resolution in a single hour may leave clients feeling frustrated and can make it difficult to maintain continuity and focus from week to week. For those who feel they have spent months circling the same pain without meaningful relief, and who are longing for more focused, accelerated progress than one-hour sessions typically allow, a trauma intensive may be exactly what is needed. This approach offers an alternative designed to support deeper healing in a shorter period of time.
What Is a Trauma Intensive?
A trauma intensive is an extended therapy session (typically 3–6 hours or multiple sessions over 1–2 days) that allows us to stay engaged in the therapeutic process without interruption, and resolve core experiences more fully and effectively. This is therapy designed for momentum. Not rushed. Not a short cut. Just intentional, supported, and immersive healing. Instead of starting and stopping each week, we create space for meaningful breakthroughs and integration. Each client receives a personalized plan tailored to their specific needs and therapeutic goals, ensuring targeted and effective healing.
Utilizing Brainspotting, a cutting-edge treatment method, clients can process and release deep neurophysiological and emotional trauma, negative self-beliefs, problematic behaviors, and performance blocks. EMDR is also very well-suited for intensives, and there may also be some integration of other modalities such as Internal Family Systems.
*Note: It is strongly preferred that intensives be done in person, however, the possibility for a virtual intensive may be considered on a case by case basis.
Why Choose an Intensive?
To work with momentum: In weekly sessions, it’s common to revisit the same material, lose emotional momentum between sessions and run out of time just as things buried deep start to come to the surface. In an intensive, we stay with the process long enough to move through it—not just touch it.
- Less Avoidance, More Progress: When therapy is spaced out, it’s easy (and natural) to avoid the hardest parts. An intensive creates a supportive structure where you can gently face head on what’s been difficult, stay present with your experience and build real traction in your healing.
- You have limited time due to work, travel, or caregiving: Many lifestyles today with various responsibilities cannot easily accommodate weekly therapy. Perhaps you travel often for work, or you don’t have the flexibility to come to appointments during business hours. Or perhaps you’re a mother of young children and it takes a lot of work to arrange childcare for a weekly appointment. By choosing an intensive, it may be more doable to arrange ahead of time to take off work or secure childcare for one day. There is potential to make more progress in one a single day of therapy than over the course of 4-6 of weekly therapy!
Please note that Mary Ann is licensed in the state of Tennessee and is unable to provide virtual therapy across state lines.
For those who reside outside of Tennessee and are able to travel, an in-person intensive can offer a focused, restorative experience—much like a personal retreat. You might even consider planning a visit to Nashville and incorporating a therapeutic retreat into your stay. Taking a day or two away from your usual responsibilities and environment can be a meaningful investment in your mental and emotional well-being.
