Emily Kerlin
LPC-MHSP (Temp)

Emily Kerlin, LPC-MHSP (Temp),  is a professional counselor who is working to get her full licensure. Emily has an incredibly diverse background having worked in a variety of treatment settings from inpatient residential to private practices, it gives her the ability to offer many different types of counseling with a level of depth professionally and experience personally few counselors can offer. She is currently accepting Aetna insurance

Emily received an undergraduate degree in Exercise and Sport Science from The University of Alabama.  She then went on to receive her master’s degree in clinical Mental Health Counseling from Colorado Christian University. Because of Emily’s undergraduate degree and her history with coaching youth sports, she understands the connection between mind, body, and spirit. She approaches therapy with curiosity about the “whole person”, not just the symptoms that have potentially brought someone to therapy.

Emily specializes in couples counseling working with those seeking pre marital counseling, couples who have experienced a lull in their relationship and those dealing with dramatic division due to addiction, emotional or sexual affairs and/or the breakdown of communication. She is certified as a SYMBIS (Saving your Marriage Before it Starts) facilitator and has used the curriculum for both pre and post marriage/couples counseling.

Emily specializes in individual trauma counseling and is also certified in the Neurosequential Model of Therapy that is best used when working with those who have experienced severe trauma. Emily also has experience working with families who have domestically adopted children with a deep understanding of the trauma that can occur through the adoption process and the importance of attachment work with parents. Emily also has worked extensively with those who have experienced trauma related to the church/spiritual.   Because Emily herself has served on a church staff, she understands what it is like to be "behind the curtain" and how that experience can have an impact on your faith.

Emily offers Family, Youth and Young Adult Counseling. With a background counseling youth, from children to young adults, she finds particular passion in helping young adults through the "quarter life crisis phase as well as working with teenagers helping them discover who they are and who they want to be. Emily thoroughly enjoys family counseling as well and the ability to “help parents better understand their child and shrink the gap that can sometimes be created during the teenager years, between child and parent.” As well as helping blended families find what works best for them and and those going through a divorce.

In addition to different types of counseling listed above, Emily has had many years working with clients struggling with grief. Those who are post divorce, those going through the divorce process, those who have experienced loss and are struggling with grief and learning how to pick up the pieces, heal and move forward.

Emily believes in meeting clients of all ages where they are and with whatever they bring into the counseling space.  You can often hear Emily say therapy is the place we discover more “data” about ourselves.  She believes gathering knowledge and understanding about ourselves, helps us better understand and love the people around us.

When Emily is not in the therapy office, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family, watching sports, and traveling.
