Emily Kerlin
LPC-MHSP (Temp)

I believe in meeting clients of all ages, couples and families where they are and with whatever they bring into the counseling space. Therapy is the place we discover more “data” about ourselves. Gathering knowledge and understanding about ourselves, helps us better understand and love the people around us. As a therapist, I am dedicated to guiding my clients through moments of extreme uncertainty. Having worked in a variety of treatment settings from inpatient residential to private practices, my background being diverse both personally and professionally gives me the ability to understand my clients on a deeper level. Whether you’re navigating communication issues in your marriage or relationship, going through a changes as a young adult or adolescent, dealing with grief and loss, conflict within your family, facing personal struggles or seeking pre-marital counseling I would love to be a part of your journey towards self-discovery and healing.

Education

I received an undergraduate degree in Exercise and Sport Science from The University of Alabama. I received my master’s degree in clinical Mental Health Counseling from Colorado Christian University. My credintials are: LPC-MHSP (Temp), I am a professional counselor who is working to get full licensure.

Therapist Experience

I have experience working with individuals, couples, families, youth and young adults facing a wide range of mental health and relationship challenges, as well as families who have adopted children and counseling couples in pre-marital counseling. I am certified as a SYMBIS (Saving your Marriage Before it Starts) facilitator and have used the curriculum for both pre and post marriage/couples counseling. I specialize in working with individuals who have experienced trauma. I am certified in the Neurosequential Model of Therapy that is best used when working with those who have experienced severe trauma. I provide a therapeutic presence and incorporates skills from Dialectical Behavior Therapy and the Polyvagal Theory to help clients to find freedom from destructive patterns of coping.

Therapy Interests

My areas of clinical interest include life transitions, managing stress and burnout, creating work-life balance, coping with grief and loss, increasing self-esteem, family/relationship conflict, healthy communication, learning yourself and facilitating healing from anxiety, depression, mood disorders and trauma. Having previous experience working on staff at a church, I have particular passion for helping those who have experienced hurt and or trauma within the church/religion and how that experience can impact your faith and perspective on God.

I love working with couple therapy clients. Each couple brings their own unique set of experiences, backgrounds, and dynamics to the therapeutic process. Whether it’s guiding pre-marital couples as they embark on their journey together, providing support to high-conflict couples seeking resolution, or assisting couples navigating the complexities of infidelity or grief, I’ve found immense fulfillment in helping couples achieve positive changes in their relationships.

I also love guiding young adults through the "quarter life crisis phase" as well as working with youth/teenagers helping them discover who they are and who they want to be. With family counseling I enjoy helping parents better understand their child and shrink the gap that can sometimes be created during the teenager years, between child and parent.

When I am not in the therapy office, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, watching sports, and traveling.
